Boquete & Highlands
There are several mountain towns located between Panama City and Western Panama that provide a relaxing escape from the humidity of the lowlands.
El Valle de Anton (Panama Oeste) – Located about two hours outside of Panama City El Valle offers a nice weekend market in the town center. The area has beautiful hikes and views, but not much of a nightlife and very few food and lodging options.
Santa Fe (Veraguas) – Santa Fe is known for it’s natural beauty and removed feel. It is a great place to go on solitary hikes, see an abundance of wildlife or check out some of the local waterfalls and national parks. Slightly far off the beaten track, it takes about 4 ½ hours to get there from Panama City – for the independent traveler it can be worth the trip.
Boquete (Chiriqui) – Boquete is extremely popular amongst the Panamanian Expat and foreigner crowd, and for good reason. Although Boquete has experienced much devolopment, the mountain charm of the area has not been lost. There are beautiful hikes, gorgeous hot springs, and numerous coffee plantations all offering very interesting tours. For backpackers, Boquete offers a much appreciated detox after the a weekend of Panama City clubs and bars.
